How it works
Google generates an Overview by running related sub-queries, retrieving candidate pages, and assembling a summary with linked citations. Pages earn citations through clear direct-answer content, strong topical authority, structured data, and technical crawlability. A page can be cited in an Overview even when it does not rank in the top organic positions for the visible query.
Why it matters
AI Overviews absorb clicks that used to go to the organic listings below them. For queries where an Overview appears, being one of its cited sources is the new position one.
