llms.txt

llms.txt is a proposed standard file that gives AI systems a curated, markdown summary of a website's most important content.

llms.txt is a proposed standard file placed at a website's root that gives AI systems a curated summary of the site's most important content in clean markdown. It functions as a guide for language models, similar in spirit to how robots.txt guides crawlers.

How it works

The file lists the site's key pages with short descriptions, formatted for machine reading. Some implementations add expanded versions with full page content. AI systems that support the standard can use it to understand a site's structure and priorities without parsing every page. Adoption among engines is still uneven, so llms.txt is a low-cost complement to, not a substitute for, crawlable full HTML.

Why it matters

llms.txt costs little to implement and signals that a site takes AI readability seriously. For brands whose positioning includes AI visibility, publishing one is basic housekeeping, but the fundamentals of retrievable, well-structured content still carry the real weight.
