Performance Max

Performance Max is Google's automated campaign type that serves ads across all Google inventory from one campaign using AI-driven bidding and targeting.

Performance Max (PMax) is Google's automated campaign type that serves ads across the entire Google inventory (Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps, Discover) from a single campaign, with AI handling bidding, targeting, and placement.

How it works

Advertisers supply creative assets, product feeds, conversion goals, and audience signals; Google's systems assemble ads and allocate spend across channels to hit the target. Performance depends heavily on input quality: accurate conversion tracking with values, strong creative variety, and clean feed data. PMax's known weakness is opacity, and it will absorb branded search demand unless brand terms are excluded, flattering its own results.

Why it matters

PMax can find efficient volume traditional campaigns miss, but unmanaged it hides where money goes and claims credit for existing demand. Run it with brand exclusions, value-based bidding, and incrementality checks, not on autopilot. Learn more about our Google Ads agency.
